Start with one of my photos, outline it in photoshop, turn it into a solid color, scratch in some details.  Add a background, trees, sky, pool, instruments, what have you.  Much of this work is inspired by Matisse's Cut Outs. 

But many of these go back to antiquity and the vase and sculpture work of the Greeks and Egyptians.  The form is simplified, and the color contrast impart the necessary information.
